About Muslim Women Talk

'Muslim Women Talk' is a new campaign aimed at including the voices of Muslim women from all walks of life. The campaign will act as a conduit between the individual and decision makers within government bodies across the UK and assist in the facilitation of frank and transparent dialogue regarding policy development and action following the London bombings of 7th July.

This is a campaign organised by a coalition of British Muslim women's groups and organisations. It is supported by the Home Office, Welsh Assembly Government & Scottish Executive.

MWT is planning a series of events set take place across the UK that will enable Muslim women to become more active in identifying the critical issues, concerns and solutions that they say need to be addressed in order to mitigate the involvement of young people in extremist groups and activities. In the long term, the vision of the campaign is to raise the conciousness of the diversity of ideas and opinions within the Muslim community and across the Islamic faith in general.

Key findings and recommendations from the meetings will be produced into a report which will be fed into the Home Office and respective devolved Government's consultations with the Muslim community and formally launched by the end of the year.

The muslimwomentalk.com website has been set up to provide a focal point for further discussion and act as an information resource for Muslim women.

Aims and Objectives

  • To harness the social capital of Muslim women through public debate and channel their experiences and concerns through to government and other public bodies.

  • To identify the critical issues that Muslim women feel need to be tackled generally within Muslim communities and more specifically following the London bombings to alleviate the alienation and disengagement of young Muslims.

  • To encourage the participation of Muslim women in decision making forums such as central and devolved government, local authorities, statutory sector, NGO's and other pubic bodies.

  • To facilitate the report's findings and recommendations into the strategy development currently being undertaken by the Home Office Taskforce, Welsh Assembly Government and Scottish Executive and other local government led initiatives that may develop.

  • To showcase and develop work already being done by Muslim women in the voluntary sector and statutory bodies that support the development of social infrastructures that strengthens families and build communities.

  • To promote polices and services that are culturally and faith sensitive.

  • To promote co-existence and social cohesion through dialogue and peaceful means.
